ADC Urges FG to Cap Petrol Prices as Hardship Worsens

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has called on the Federal Government to immediately introduce a temporary cap on petrol prices, warning that the continuous increase in fuel costs is worsening the economic hardship faced by Nigerians.

In a statement released on Wednesday in Abuja, the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, said rising petrol prices have significantly driven up transportation costs, food prices, and general household expenses across the country.

Abdullahi explained that petrol prices directly influence the cost of goods and services, noting that any increase in fuel prices automatically raises the cost of living for ordinary citizens. He urged the government to take urgent steps to stabilise fuel prices and provide targeted support for low-income households.

The ADC also expressed concern over the Federal Government’s plan to distribute 100,000 Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) conversion kits nationwide as part of its alternative fuel programme. According to the party, the initiative would benefit only a small number of motorists considering Nigeria has over 11 million vehicles.

The party further warned that the limited number of CNG refuelling stations across the country could make the programme difficult to implement effectively.

ADC therefore called for a comprehensive long-term energy policy that would provide sustainable solutions to Nigeria’s fuel and energy challenges while protecting citizens from rising economic pressure.
