The National Human Rights Commission has called on civil society organisations and government Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) to fully implement Nigeria’s National Action Plan for the Promotion and Protection of Human Rights (2024–2028) to improve citizens’ welfare and strengthen human rights protection across the country.
Speaking during a consultative meeting in Lagos, NHRC Deputy Director, Mrs. Yemisi Akhile, said the action plan was designed to improve coordination and accountability in the protection of human rights nationwide.
She explained that the policy is a working document that requires continuous monitoring and evaluation to ensure effective implementation, stressing that human rights must be exercised responsibly without infringing on the rights of others.
Akhile also said the commission has continued sensitisation campaigns across markets, schools, religious institutions, traditional centres and law enforcement agencies to promote awareness of human rights.
Also speaking at the meeting, Deputy Director of Investigation and Acting State Coordinator of NHRC Lagos, Mr. Patrick Akinwunmi, said protecting human rights is a collective responsibility involving all sectors of society and government institutions.
Participants at the meeting called for stronger public awareness campaigns and sustained collaboration among stakeholders to ensure proper enforcement of human rights protections across Nigeria.
