Former military President, General Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida (rtd.), has given the newly elected National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Kabiru Turaki, SAN, a firm directive to rebuild the party and correct its past mistakes as preparations for the 2027 general elections intensify.
Turaki led members of the PDP National Working Committee to Babangida’s Hilltop residence in Minna on a combined courtesy and condolence visit following recent abductions in Niger State.
Babangida commended the party’s leadership for identifying with the people of Niger State during what he described as one of their most difficult periods. He reaffirmed the PDP’s strong national presence, recalling his earlier attempt to institutionalise a two-party system, which was resisted at the time.
Drawing from his political experience, Babangida urged Turaki to embrace tact, broad consultation and inclusive leadership as he takes on the task of restructuring the party.
“You admitted that the party made mistakes and has begun correcting them. Use tact, seek people’s opinions, and work towards building a peaceful and progressive party. You have the capacity to do it,” he advised.
He illustrated the power of party structures in Nigeria with a story of a former military administrator who once met a resident that remained loyal to the old ruling party, despite a military regime being in place.
In his response, Turaki thanked Babangida for his longstanding support, pledging that the PDP would restore its internal strength and winning spirit ahead of 2027.
“We are committed to resetting this party, strengthening its organs, and restoring its winning spirit,” he said.
Sources at the meeting said Babangida further encouraged the party leadership to maintain unity, rebuild trust and stabilise its structures nationwide.
