The Senate has summoned the Minister of Aviation, the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA), the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), and airline owners over the sharp and “astronomical” increase in domestic flight ticket prices.
The decision followed a motion by Sen. Abdulfatai Buhari (APC–Oyo), who warned that the spike—such as Lagos to Abuja costing ₦400,000—was causing severe hardship for Nigerians ahead of the festive season. He stressed that with bad road conditions, many citizens now have no affordable travel option.
Senators Adamu Aliero and Senate President Godswill Akpabio condemned the exploitative fares, with Akpabio citing a ₦500,000 Abuja–Enugu ticket, equivalent to five months of the minimum wage.
However, Sen. Orji Uzor Kalu disagreed with the motion, arguing that the concerns do not reflect the realities faced by airline operators.
The summoned aviation agencies are to appear before the Senate Committee on Aviation for explanations.
