EFCC: Yahaya Bello Presumed Innocent as N80.2bn Fraud Trial Continues

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has reaffirmed that former Kogi State Governor, Yahaya Bello, remains innocent until proven guilty, as his N80.2 billion fraud trial is still ongoing.

The Commission said it is solely the responsibility of the court to determine Bello’s guilt or innocence, not the EFCC. This clarification followed public reactions to Bello’s declaration of interest in contesting the Kogi Central Senatorial seat in 2027.

Bello is currently standing trial before Justice Emeka Nwite of the Federal High Court in Maitama, Abuja, over alleged diversion and misappropriation of Kogi State funds during his tenure as governor.

Speaking on Arise Television’s Morning Show, the EFCC Director of Public Affairs, Wilson Uwuajeren, explained that criminal prosecution in Nigeria takes time, involving the presentation of witnesses and documentary evidence before the court.

He said the EFCC is actively presenting its case and that the outcome will be determined strictly by the court. Uwuajeren stressed that under the Nigerian Constitution, any person on trial is presumed innocent until proven guilty.

He added that Bello’s political ambitions have no bearing on the charges against him, noting that the EFCC has no interest in party politics and remains focused on diligent prosecution.

Uwuajeren reaffirmed the Commission’s commitment to ensuring justice for both the prosecution and the defence, insisting that the case is being handled in line with due process.
