Halt April 7 Nationwide Protest, Police Warn Organisers

The Nigeria Police Force has urged the organisers of a planned nationwide protest scheduled for April 7, 2025, to suspend the demonstration.

The protest, spearheaded by the Take-It-Back (TIB) movement, was announced in response to various national concerns. However, in a statement issued on Sunday, the Force Public Relations Officer, Muyiwa Adejobi, described the timing of the protest as inappropriate, noting that it coincides with the newly established National Police Day.

“In line with global best practices where countries honour their police institutions, the Nigerian government has officially designated April 7 as National Police Day,” the statement said.

“It is therefore questionable and perceived as a deliberate and unpatriotic act to schedule a nationwide protest on the same day. Such action could potentially tarnish the image of the Nigeria Police and the nation at large. The Police Force strongly advises the organisers to reconsider and shelve the planned protest, as it is both ill-timed and appears to be mischievous in intent.”

The police called for dialogue as a more constructive alternative, encouraging the protest leaders to engage with relevant government institutions to address their concerns.

“The Nigeria Police Force, under the leadership of Inspector-General Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, Ph.D., NPM, remains committed to fulfilling its duties within the bounds of the law and with respect for citizens’ rights,” the statement added. “We therefore urge the organisers and potential participants of the planned protest to pursue peaceful dialogue through the appropriate channels.”
