Plateau, Borno Killings: Dozens Dead as Survivors Recount Horror, Security Gaps Exposed

Nigeria is in mourning following deadly attacks in Plateau and Borno states that left scores of people dead within 24 hours, exposing ongoing security challenges.

In Plateau State, at least 28 residents were killed when gunmen stormed Angwan Rukuba in Jos North on March 29, opening fire on homes and public spaces. Survivors described a coordinated assault by attackers on motorcycles, moving house-to-house and shooting indiscriminately.

Victims included civilians caught in homes and businesses, while several others sustained injuries and were rushed to the Jos University Teaching Hospital. The attack, which occurred on Palm Sunday, triggered panic and displacement among residents.

Governor Caleb Mutfwang condemned the killings, imposed a 48-hour curfew, and pledged to bring perpetrators to justice while covering medical expenses for victims. Security agencies have since deployed additional personnel, though tensions persisted after the curfew was relaxed.

Barely a day later, suspected Boko Haram insurgents attacked Kautikari village in Chibok Local Government Area of Borno State, killing at least 22 people, including a local hunters’ commander.

Among the victims was Peter Yohanna, who was to be married days after the attack. Residents said the attackers operated without resistance due to the absence of security forces, looting homes and forcing many to flee.

Senator Mohammed Ali Ndume attributed the continued violence in the North-East to inadequate military equipment, urging the Federal Government to provide advanced weapons and strengthen frontline operations.

The twin attacks have heightened fears across affected communities, with calls for improved intelligence, stronger security presence, and proactive measures to curb recurring violence.
