PDP: Nyesom Wike Blasts Defectors

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has declared that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has been reclaimed by loyal members, asserting renewed control of the party amid ongoing defections.

Speaking at the party’s 10th Elective National Convention in Abuja, Wike described the gathering as a turning point, signaling the PDP’s recovery from its prolonged internal crisis. The convention, monitored by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), was boycotted by some rival factions.

Wike criticized defecting governors and opposition figures, taking a swipe at Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s former presidential candidate, accusing him of failing to demonstrate leadership during internal party challenges. He argued that true leadership requires staying to resolve crises rather than abandoning the platform.

He urged aggrieved members to return, assuring them of inclusion, unity, and discipline within the party.

Earlier, the PDP Acting National Chairman, Abdulrahman Mohammed, called on members to set aside personal ambitions and prioritise the party’s stability. He stressed that no individual interest should override the survival of the PDP, urging adherence to constitutional order and internal unity.

Also speaking, former Abia State Governor, Okezie Ikpeazu, warned that failure to reconcile internal divisions could lead to the party’s collapse, describing unity as essential to its future.

Similarly, former Jigawa State Governor, Sule Lamido, appealed to defectors to return, emphasizing the PDP’s historical role in promoting national unity since its formation in 1998.

The convention comes as the party intensifies efforts to rebuild and reposition itself ahead of the 2027 general elections.
