President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has paid glowing tribute to former President Olusegun Obasanjo on his 89th birthday, describing his influence in Nigeria, Africa and the global community as profound and enduring.
In a statement issued on Wednesday in Abuja by his spokesman, Mr. Bayo Onanuga, Tinubu praised Obasanjo’s courage, sacrifices and lifelong service to the nation.
The President recalled that Obasanjo served as Nigeria’s military Head of State from 1976 to 1979, overseeing a historic transition that returned the country to civilian rule in 1979. He also highlighted Obasanjo’s tenure as the first civilian president of the Fourth Republic from 1999 to 2007.
Tinubu acknowledged the elder statesman’s role in preserving Nigeria’s unity, promoting democratic governance and advancing Africa’s political and economic interests on the global stage. He further noted Obasanjo’s imprisonment during the military era for opposing authoritarian rule.
“As Chief Obasanjo turns 89, we recognise the zeal and wisdom he continues to bring to Nigeria’s development,” the President stated.
Tinubu also commended Obasanjo’s intellectual contributions through his books and public engagements, praying for more years of good health, strength and wisdom for the former leader in continued service to the nation and humanity.
