Monday Sit-at-Home: Anambra Govt Threatens One-Week Suspension for Absent Students

The Anambra State Government has warned that any student who fails to attend school on Mondays will face a one-week suspension.

The Commissioner for Education, Ngozi Chuma-Udeh, issued the directive on Wednesday while addressing the management of Mount Olive Schools and Springfield Academy GRA Onitsha at her office.

Chuma-Udeh said the action followed instructions from Governor Chukwuma Soludo as part of the state government’s resolve to ensure full academic activities resume across Anambra on Mondays.

She said the schools were summoned to explain alleged noncompliance with the government’s directive on compulsory Monday attendance.

“This measure is in line with the state government’s determination to ensure full resumption of academic activities on Mondays across Anambra. Schools must comply with this directive,” the commissioner stated.

While Mount Olive Schools reported improvement in attendance, Springfield Academy said some parents were still reluctant to send their children to school on Mondays. Both institutions pledged to intensify efforts to ensure regular student attendance.

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Education, through its Examination Development Centre, conducted the 2026 Transition Placement Examination across the state.

Chuma-Udeh said she monitored the exercise alongside the Permanent Secretary, visiting centres including UNIZIK Demonstration School, Igwebeze Primary School and Igwebuike Grammar School, all located in Awka.
