Minister of Education, Tunji Alausa, has denied reports that he plans to resign from the Federal Executive Council to contest the 2027 Lagos State governorship election.
Alausa, in a post on X on Wednesday, said he remains fully committed to his duties at the Federal Ministry of Education, dismissing claims that he was preparing to step down from office.
“We’re still hard at work here at the FME, don’t believe the rumours,” the minister wrote.
Speculation had emerged that some political appointees were considering resignation ahead of the 2027 general elections to enable them participate in party primaries.
According to the 2027 election timetable released by the Independent National Electoral Commission, political parties are scheduled to conduct their primaries between April 23 and May 30.
The timetable indicates that political office holders intending to contest elective positions would be required to vacate their offices before taking part in party primaries.
In addition, Section 77(2) of the Electoral Act 2026 mandates political parties to submit a comprehensive digital membership register to INEC at least 21 days before their primaries. The register must contain detailed information on party members, including personal data and identification records, and only those listed will be eligible to vote or be voted for during party primaries, congresses and conventions.
Alausa maintained that reports linking him to a planned resignation and governorship bid are unfounded, stressing that his current focus remains on his responsibilities at the education ministry.
