Wike Accuses New PDP Entrants of Trying to Destroy Party, Backs Caretaker Leadership

FCT Minister Nyesom Wike says he and other founding members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) will not allow politicians who joined the party from elsewhere to “kill the PDP.”

He spoke on Sunday during the NEC meeting of the Abdulrahman Mohammed-led faction held at his residence in Abuja.

Wike criticised the Kabiru Tanimu Turaki-led faction, accusing them of violating court orders by conducting what he described as an illegal convention. He said the group ignored two valid Federal High Court judgments but still went ahead to seek recognition from a State High Court.

He questioned why the faction would hold a convention in defiance of court rulings and then return to a Federal High Court seeking legitimacy. Wike warned that such actions endanger the future of the party, stressing that leadership must be rooted in honesty and adherence to the law.

“We must not allow our party to die. If we don’t respect our own laws, how do we earn respect from Nigerians?” he said.

At the meeting, participants asked the NEC to set up a Caretaker Committee since the tenure of the current NWC expires on Tuesday.

Responding, PDP BoT Chairman Sen. Mao Ohuabunwa said the transition plan aligns with the party’s constitution and is aimed at ensuring stability and strengthening internal reforms.

The NEC later constituted a 13-member National Caretaker Committee to run the party for 60 days. The committee is chaired by Abdulrahman Mohammed, with Sen. Samuel Anyanwu as Secretary, and will oversee all pending congresses and organise a national convention.

Other key appointments include Kamaldeen Ajibade (SAN) as National Legal Adviser and Umar Bature as National Organising Secretary.
