Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara has officially dumped the PDP for the APC, ending months of speculation.
He announced the move during a stakeholder meeting at Government House, Port Harcourt.
The defection comes 72 hours after 17 PDP lawmakers in the Rivers State Assembly, led by Speaker Martins Amaewhule, also defected to the APC.
Fubara said he briefed President Bola Tinubu on the political situation on Monday and praised the President for helping Rivers overcome its recent crisis. According to him, joining the APC is “better for Rivers State.”
Political observers note that Fubara’s move was one of the conditions reportedly raised during Tinubu’s peace deal between him and FCT Minister Nyesom Wike.
With this development, all six South-South states are now controlled by the APC, raising concerns about a gradual shift toward a one-party system.
Meanwhile, Rivers PDP Chairman Robinson Ewor says he will not follow Fubara to the APC, insisting the governor “has the right to choose where he wants to belong.”
