Tinubu, National Assembly and Wike Donate N320m to Nigerian Legion for Armed Forces Remembrance Day

President Bola Tinubu has donated N200 million to support the Nigerian Legion ahead of the 2026 Armed Forces Remembrance Day, reaffirming his administration’s commitment to serving and retired military personnel as well as families of fallen soldiers.

The National Assembly, represented by Senate President Godswill Akpabio and Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu, contributed N100 million, while the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, donated N20 million.

The donations were announced at the launch of the 2026 Armed Forces Remembrance Day Emblem at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, where the Chairman of the National Council of the Nigerian Legion, Morenike Grace Henry, decorated the President, Vice President Kashim Shettima, top lawmakers, and service chiefs with the remembrance poppy.

President Tinubu urged institutions, businesses, and individuals to continue supporting the Nigerian Legion, emphasising the nation’s obligation to honour fallen heroes and care for wounded officers, retirees, and widows.

He praised the Armed Forces for their efforts in restoring security, noting the surrender of thousands of insurgents, the neutralisation of major terrorist leaders, and the recovery of captives. The President also highlighted improvements in maritime security, reductions in oil theft, and enhancements in military welfare—including upgraded allowances, improved barracks, expanded healthcare services, and modernised pension verification systems.

Chief of Defence Staff, Lt.-Gen. Olufemi Oluyede, described the emblem as a national symbol of appreciation for veterans, saying the gesture reflects Nigeria’s commitment to those who served.

Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Defence, Richard Pheelangwa, added that the Remembrance Day is an opportunity to honour the sacrifices of personnel whose efforts have made it possible for schools, markets, and communities to reopen in previously troubled regions.

Armed Forces Remembrance Day go is commemorated annually on January 15 to honour fallen soldiers and celebrate living veterans.
