Nigeria’s development is intricately linked to the mental well-being of its citizens, says Dr Salome Chidinma Chikezie. According to the Guidiance and Counseling Scholar, Mental health counseling is a vital component in addressing the nation’s socio-economic challenges, promoting emotional resilience, and fostering a productive workforce.

In an interview session with Pristine Newspapers, Dr Chikezie said mental health counseling in Nigeria will be beneficial to the society as it would result to the following:

-Enhanced Productivity: By addressing mental health concerns, individuals can maintain productivity, innovate, and contribute to the workforce, driving economic stability and progress.
-Improved Human Capital: Mental health counseling enhances cognitive function, creativity, and problem-solving skills, leading to a more skilled and competitive workforce.
-Social Cohesion: By promoting emotional intelligence and well-being, mental health counseling fosters a positive and supportive community, reducing social conflicts and promoting national unity.
-Economic Growth: Investing in mental health counseling can reduce the economic burden of mental health issues, estimated to cost Nigeria billions of naira annually.

The scholar also stated that to prioritize mental health counseling, Nigeria should:

– Increase access to mental health services, particularly in rural areas

– Strengthen mental health policies and legislation, ensuring adequate funding and support for mental health initiatives
– Foster partnerships between government, private sector, and civil society organizations to support mental health efforts
