Aliko Dangote to Retire as Chairman of Dangote Sugar Refinery in June 2025

Aliko Dangote, Africa’s foremost industrialist, will step down as Chairman of the Board of Dangote Sugar Refinery Plc on June 16, 2025, marking the end of two decades of transformative leadership.

The announcement was made in a statement signed by the company’s Secretary, Temitope Hassan, on Wednesday.

Dangote, who has led the board since 2005, is widely credited with positioning Dangote Sugar as a dominant force in Nigeria’s sugar industry. During his tenure, the company underwent major expansion initiatives and embraced robust corporate governance practices.

“In line with the principles of good corporate governance and succession planning, Dangote Sugar Refinery Plc hereby announces the retirement of our esteemed Chairman of the Board of Directors, Alhaji Aliko Dangote (GCON), effective June 16, 2025,” the statement read.

Under his leadership, Dangote Sugar launched and executed strategic Backward Integration Projects (BIP) across Adamawa, Taraba, and Nasarawa States, aimed at enhancing local sugar production and reducing dependence on imports—critical goals under Nigeria’s sugar master plan.

Following a structured succession process, the Board has approved the appointment of Mr. Arnold Ekpe, an Independent Non-Executive Director, as Dangote’s successor.

“Following a rigorous selection and transition process, the Board is pleased to announce the appointment of Mr. Arnold Ekpe as the new Chairman of Dangote Sugar Refinery Plc, effective June 16, 2025,” the statement concluded.

Ekpe, a seasoned executive with decades of experience in banking and corporate leadership, is expected to steer the company into its next growth phase, building on Dangote’s legacy of industrial excellence and strategic vision
