Dele Momodu, a two-time presidential aspirant and prominent chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has asserted that unseating President Bola Tinubu and the All Progressives Congress (APC) in 2027 will require a united coalition of political parties.
Speaking during the “Guest of the Month” programme hosted by the Broadcasting Corporation of Oyo State (BCOS) in Ibadan on Tuesday, Momodu expressed deep concerns about the internal crisis within the PDP.
“My soul has already left the PDP; only my body remains,” he remarked, lamenting the internal divisions that have continued to weaken the party.
According to Momodu, although the PDP has the capacity to challenge the APC, disunity and internal sabotage are hampering its ability to present a credible opposition. He claimed that elements within the APC are deliberately fueling divisions within the PDP to maintain dominance ahead of the next general election.
“The APC is jittery because it knows the PDP remains the only viable opposition. That’s why efforts are being made to factionalize and destabilize it from within,” he said.
He further stressed that, “A fractured PDP cannot defeat the APC. The ruling party’s strategy is to systematically undermine the opposition’s strength through internal sabotage.”
While acknowledging that the PDP operates within the bounds of the law and follows due process in disciplining errant members, Momodu insisted that legal measures alone won’t restore the party’s unity or effectiveness.
He emphasized the need for a broad-based alliance to challenge Tinubu’s re-election bid.
“To defeat President Tinubu in 2027, there must be a formidable coalition. And for any contender to stand a chance, they must emerge from a different regional base,” he concluded.
