Detty December Has Opened Our Eyes To Nigeria’s Tourism Potential – Minister

The Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, has emphasized the need to further open Nigeria’s borders to tourism, citing the success of last year’s festive season, popularly known as “Detty December.”

“Detty December” refers to the vibrant end-of-year celebrations in Nigeria, typically spanning mid-December through the New Year, which attract both local and international visitors.

Speaking on Politics Today on Channels Television on Thursday, Tunji-Ojo noted that the surge in tourists during the period had a significant positive impact on the economy. In response, he said the Federal Government is now prioritizing policies that facilitate easier access for foreign visitors to boost tourism and foreign direct investment.

“We must make it easy for legitimate visitors to explore the beauty of our country. Nigeria must be open for business, and that is exactly what Mr. President is working hard to achieve—enhancing foreign direct investment and encouraging more people to visit,” he said.

Highlighting last December’s record-breaking influx of tourists, Tunji-Ojo stressed that the government is committed to creating an environment that welcomes more international guests.

“We saw the highest number of visitors coming into Nigeria for the New Year celebrations, and it was a remarkable experience. That alone proves that we need to open up our space even more,” he added.
