Twelve inmates escaped during an early morning jailbreak at the Federal Correctional Centre in Kotonkarfe, Kogi State, on Monday.
Kogi State Commissioner for Information, Kingsley Fanwo, described the incident as “unfortunate” and assured citizens that the government, in collaboration with security agencies, is taking immediate steps to prevent future occurrences.
He confirmed that law enforcement officers had already re-arrested one of the escapees.
“The claim that the inmates escaped through the tower without causing any structural damage raises serious concerns,” Fanwo stated.
“This calls for a thorough investigation to determine the exact circumstances of the escape, apprehend the fleeing inmates, and identify any possible internal sabotage,” he added.
The commissioner further noted that Governor Usman Ododo has directed security agencies to ensure such breaches do not happen again.
He urged the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious individuals, warning that anyone found harboring an escaped inmate would face consequences.
“There is no cause for panic. We encourage citizens to go about their daily activities as usual, knowing that the security of lives and property remains our top priority,” Fanwo assured.
